Manual Control can be difficult to deliver

Manual Control is costly and difficult to deliver, and places an operative in a dangerous environment where they are exposed to traffic, abuse from the public and pollution.

In many applications, a man on site could be avoided through the use of more efficient and reliable technology.

Manual Control

VA mode can block the shuttle lane

VA and other systems over-extend green times, which become inefficient in higher traffic volumes. The outdated Doppler radar technology used in VA is unable to cope with congestion, which can disrupt phase service.

When signal phasing is disrupted the shuttle lane can become blocked. This can cause significant frustration for road users and can severely impact surrounding infrastructure.

Keep traffic flowing 24/7 with AutoGreen

AutoGreen is an advanced method of Vehicle Actuation for portable traffic signals that uses artificial intelligence to optimise signal operation to best suit current traffic conditions.

AutoGreen improves traffic flow, reduces driver frustration and lessens the need for manual control or manual intervention.

AutoGreen is proven to improve journey times through roadworks by 50% compared to VA.

Better Control Requires Advanced Detection

Our Micro and RadioConnect2 Portable Traffic Signals rely on the advanced AGD302 FMCW radar, the first ever use of Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave technology in the context of portable signals, made possible through our collaboration with AGD Systems.

The AGD 302 brings a new dimension for radar technology that cannot be achieved using traditional Doppler radars, such as;

  • Records significantly higher fidelity data than Doppler radars
  • Range determination unaffected by target size
  • Not susceptible to non-vehicle targets or reflections
  • Multi-target acquisition whilst retaining low power credentials

This combination has enabled Traffic Group Signals to develop complex algorithms and scenarios that exist in AutoGreen Technology, with proven performance benefits demonstrated over years of field trials and real-life application.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some of the questions we have received about AutoGreen Technology.

AutoGreen is suitable for the majority of 2-way applications, from rural to urban roads, and can be used as an alternative to manual control where authority permit conditions allow. AutoGreen has also been deployed on Highways England road networks, and you can read about a recent deployment here.

When deploying AutoGreen, we would advise to consider the following factors:

  • Proximity and interactions with nearby junctions and pedestrian crossings.
  • Any requirement to keep specific junctions or facilities free of queues e.g. Motorways, hospitals.
  • Average Annualised Daily Flow (AADF) of traffic that is greater than 22,000 vehicles. (see: DfT Traffic Volumes)

In critical locations or high traffic volume sites, we would suggest the job be performed under UTC control.

Setting high green times on VA will not achieve the same results as AutoGreen!

Setting high green times increases the risk of the shuttle lane becoming blocked and will reduce throughput efficiency, which can result in severe congestion from which it cannot recover.

AutoGreen is the only system that can detect when a site is congested and gives every phase guaranteed green time, even when traffic is backing through the shuttle lane.

No, Traffic Group Signals is the only company that can supply AutoGreen.

AutoGreen is the only portable traffic signal system that uses an FMCW radar, there is no other system using the same technology that operates in the same way. Doppler radars only detect movement and cannot detect gaps or identify vehicles, therefore they cannot react in the same way as AutoGreen.

AutoGreen required years of extensive research & development, testing and live trials, resulting in a highly sophisticated technology that is supported by a body of evidence. Be wary of unsupported claims of copycat technology.

Yes, we have the data to support our claims.

AutoGreen required years of extensive research & development, testing and live trials, resulting in a highly sophisticated technology that is supported by a body of evidence. We have published a full set of results of our AutoGreen trials in a peer reviewed technical paper, that was presented at the 2019 JCT Symposium.

In these trials, AutoGreen was proven to improve journey times by up to 50% compared to VA.

Unlike pale imitations and standard traffic lights, AutoGreen Technology protects the cycle and ensures that no phase loses its turn. This allows the shuttle lane to clear at each turn to reduce build-up. In other systems the lights revert to red if traffic movements are blocked, making the traffic situation worse.

AutoGreen is the only system that automatically responds to congestion and adjusts timings. This helps avoid further congestion.

AutoGreen has the necessary sophistication to replace manual control at most 2-way sites. Additionally, ACM technology ensures the signals are supremely reliable in operation, allowing them to be deployed for extended periods without issue.

Removing the man from site will help deliver cost savings and increase site safety.

AutoGreen and ARVA utilise the same technology but applied differently across our former Pike Signals and Hollco ranges.

As of July 2019, we took the decision to re-brand ARVA to AutoGreen to avoid confusion in the market place, and to invest our resources in building a single AutoGreen presence.

For owners of ARVA branded equipment, we are happy to provide AutoGreen stickers to apply to your base units. To request some, please contact [email protected] with your requirements.
