The UK’s largest portable signal deployment delivered by Traffic Group Signals

In what is being hailed as the largest ever deployment of portable traffic signals, over 40 Evo1 portable traffic signals have taken control of the busy Moor Farm roundabout situated on the A19 at Cramlington.

Traffic Group Signals were called in to help when a vehicle collided with the permanent signal outstation, immediately resulting in a complete loss of power to the traffic signals located around the junction. HW Martin, who are responsible for the repairs, required a solution at short notice, whilst minimising the impact to vehicle flow to what is already a very congested commuter route, in fact, over 73k* vehicles travel through the site every single day (*AADF via DfT).

Darren Hudson, Sr Project Manager comments “This is, by a county mile, the most complex and large scale deployment of portable signals anywhere in the UK right now. After monitoring the site closely following deployment and making measured adjustments to the signal timings, we have been able to restore normal vehicle flow through the junction.”

Since being deployed, the site has been selected as a showcase of intelligent signalling and what it can offer the temporary traffic management industry.

Scheme overview

The scheme comprises of 3 Evo1 Pro master controllers, which are synchronised together to control 40 traffic and 3 pedestrian crossings. It uses stage-based signalling and CLF timing plans to replicate and improve upon the timings previously set for the junction by the permanent signals. Multiple CCTV cameras were deployed to provide full visibility of the junction, removing the need for a man on site and providing 24/7 monitoring capability.

Disaster Strikes!

To further add to the challenge, a broken down vehicle blocked one of the site exits. Fortunately, our Professional Services team have a range of tools to monitor, adapt and evaluate changes to signal timings remotely. The minute the issue arose, our team were alerted to rising journey times through the area. With a series of timely updates during the incident, the team were able to keep vehicles safely moving through whilst the issue was resolved.
