Traffic Group Signals present at JCT Symposium 2023

Traffic Group Signals were proud to present at the annual JCT Traffic Signals Symposium, held at Nottingham Trent University on the 14-15 September.

Dr Darren Hudson, Sr Projects Manager at The Traffic Group, presented his paper “The Tortoise and the Hare: Modelling Road User Micro-Journeys to Determine Accurate Intergreen Times” which explored a new method of calculating intergreen times for all road users.

In the paper, Darren researches how different vehicle and pedestrian movements through roadworks vary, and how slower moving road users are not well accounted for in the guidance. Site geometry can also play a significant role on how quickly road users can travel through the site, whereas current guidance on timings assume a level gradient.

This research is then fed into a new physics model for timing calculation, which is implemented in our proprietary design software, Signal Studio. Through the intergreen calculation wizard, users are able to draw vehicle paths between phases and quickly calculate safe intergreen times, taking into account the site gradient and allowing for slow or vulnerable road users.

The paper highlights how signal timings vary between the guidance-led model and the physics-led model.
