Traffic Group Signals is proud to have played a pivotal role in the delivery of one of the most significant transport infrastructure improvements in Leeds in recent years — the extensive redevelopment of the Dawsons Corner junction and the Stanningley Bypass.
This transformational project, led by Leeds City Council and delivered by main contractor John Sisk & Son, tackles congestion and enhances safety at one of the city’s busiest transport gateways. The scheme — backed by £44 million of investment from the Department for Transport and the West Yorkshire Combined Authority — aims to modernise a vital connection between Leeds and Bradford for all road users.
Record-Breaking Metro Deployment
Working in partnership with Premier Traffic Management, Traffic Group Signals provided temporary traffic control solutions that ensured safe and efficient traffic movement throughout construction. This included our largest-ever Metro system deployment, featuring 68 Metro units, expertly configured to deliver robust and reliable control across this complex multi-phase site.
This scale of deployment not only reflects the technical capabilities of our temporary traffic signal systems but also showcases the confidence our clients place in Metro as a flexible, wireless solution for major, high-profile infrastructure projects.
Designed Around People and Traffic
The Dawsons Corner junction experiences exceptionally high usage: approximately 58,000 vehicles and 1,200 pedestrians and cyclists pass through this key intersection every day. To support safe and efficient travel during construction, the Traffic Group Signals team worked closely with Premier Traffic Management and the site team to deliver:
-
Stage-based signal design using CLF plans, optimising phasing and sequencing across evolving site conditions.
-
Temporary traffic signal control systems, tailored to maintain vehicle flows while enabling safe access for pedestrians and cyclists.
-
Temporary pedestrian crossings, calibrated to protect vulnerable road users throughout busy working periods.
Our expertise in temporary signal deployment ensured that traffic management could adapt dynamically as the project progressed — maintaining movement for the city’s commuters, public transport services, and active travel users.
Collaborative Delivery on a Major Urban Scheme
The success of this project relied on strong collaboration between local authority, contractor, and supply chain partners. Traffic Group Signals’ work on Dawsons Corner highlights not only our product innovation but also our ability to support complex traffic management strategies on large-scale infrastructure developments.
As the scheme continues to improve connectivity, reduce congestion, and enhance safety in one of West Yorkshire’s busiest corridors, our temporary signal systems remain an essential contributor — delivering control solutions that help keep traffic moving and people safe.
